I definitely think you're onto something here, but I think it's more relevant with a lot of the pop-culture references from these classic episodes.

My season 7 DVDs definitely get the most use around my house. They seriously never get old.

They have their fun with organized religion, but I never really got a vibe that the writers had any true disdain for genuine believers. For as much as they make fun of Ned, it's always fairly playful.
