The original version of A New Hope used the alphabet. Aurebesh came later and was retconned into the movies in later versions. The ship names were correct for a bit. They just need another retcon to explain the names.

Chinese audiences will walk out of a movie if the stars aren’t pretty or handsome enough. Their logic is that why would anybody pay money to look at average folks.
I think it also contradicts their self-perception of ages-long continuity, as it makes the history one of multiple different states that just happened to have overlapping territory rising and falling over the years.
