The story I read didn’t specify their son’s beneficiary. I misinterpreted a reference to dad’s wife. I don’t have a WaPo subscription and I guess the Huffingtonpost rewrite wasn’t clear. I was really hoping the dad was misunderstood. I saw a pic of the dad and the soldier and the looked so happy.

The article I read quoted the dad saying he and his wife were having a hard time accepting how the son was killed. I assumed the wife was the mother. I wish “his ex-wife” was more specific. It looks like I’m alone in my interpretation, not the first time I’ve been wrong.

The money went to the son’s ex, he probably didn’t change the beneficiary after divorce. The dad needed money for the funeral.
