Better mental health services to help people cope with life’s stresses, a better social safety net so that losing a job doesn’t mean homelessness and loss of medical care, better education so people don’t feel like this is an option, and yeah, less access to guns.

My old high school had a single student shot when someone brought a gun into the cafeteria, so it wasn’t a big news story. This is just “oh, yeah, it happens everywhere all the time.

Obama was shocked and hurt by the thought of children being senselessly murdered in mass shootings, and since the entire Republican platform is “whatever will piss off libs” they decided they like kids getting killed. 

“Unexpected but unsurprising” was how I described most of what I saw in Afghanistan. Like, wow, you see stuff that defies all reason and expectation, but it just sort of becomes “oh yeah, shit’s weird here” and loses its ability to shock. It is not a healthy or sustainable mindset.

Remember how Obama talked about how the days where he spoke following a mass shooting were some of the most difficult and upsetting things he had to do as President?  And now it turns out, the President could just “not do anything” when shit like this happens?
