when I played Vagrant Story I felt it had a completely unnecessary combat system, all to fight.. bats. I mean, if it's complex/confusing, at least add big battles like The Last Remnant.

kinda what I was going to say. I'm not a huge fan of the series, but comparing it to others where the story is much more linear, it's easy to see why the ending was so annoying to some people.
