Same here. I find Granny Smith’s to be far too tart for my taste, too.

“War of the Worlds: Global Dispatches” (edited by Kevin J. Anderson) is a cool anthology of stories of the 1898 Martian invasion in other parts of the world (e.g. Imperial China). It includes Waldrop’s take, and I recommend it.
