I understand that Elsa Lanchester’s Miss Plimsoll was added to the movie because Laughton was old and ailing at the time, and this way she (Mrs. Laughton) could keep an eye on her husband’s health.

Charles and Elsa were married, after all.

The acts are all at least minimally decent. I’ve been following Eurovision for some years, and I’m of the opinion that it’s basically an international “Battle of the Bands”. It’s not so much about the music as it is the fun of the whole thing.

There’s also a great example of how you should call out people for making a racist comment. The movie opens with Matthau showing a group of Japanese guests around (they’re from Tokyo’s subway, and are checking out NYC’s subway system) and, thinking they don’t understand English, passes them off to the next person with

Crème brûlée.

I’d give an Honorable Mention to “Humanoid Woman”. That was a Sandy Frank hatchet job of To the Stars By Hard Ways (Cherez ternii k zvyozdam), a 1981 Soviet SF film that has been deservedly praised.

I’ve read some of Butler’s work, and enjoyed it. She deserves the awards she’s received.
