I've been enjoying Toll's trilogy more than Atkinson's, but I have a hard time articulating why. I do think the final Atkinson book was the best of the 3. There is a new release called War At The End Of The World by James Duffy about the New Guinea campaign that is on my list to read also.

MacArthur At War by Walter Borneman: most histories of the Pacific theater in WW2 jump quickly from "I shall return" to "I have returned." This history fills in the blanks. Pretty cursory on the military details, focusing more on the man. Credit for being fair to his subject on his strengths and faults.

I think you are a little hard on the film. I agree it is slow moving but it's never boring. McDowell is suitably creepy. I actually owned the soundtrack way back when. Kinski was sexy as hell to my teenage eyes back then too. I give it a watch on those rare occasions when it airs somewhere
