Haha, I had that reaction to FF7 for a little bit, but it grew on me. I personally also like reading about games just as much if not more than playing them. So any time I play through a game that lets me participate in a new critical discussion, I’m really happy. (Except Dark Souls. No.)

Haha, I played 90% of MGS3 way back in the day until my disk broke right before the much-lauded final boss, so I know what I’m in for somewhat. I got the full HD collection on PS3, which has Peace Walker I believe. I also own the Phantom Pain, although it sounds like you’re not a fan :)

I definitely think it’s cool to not be part of the conversation and I hope I didn’t come off judgy! Usually that desire, for me, is an internal feeling rather than outside pressure. I really wanted to know why people loved FF7 so much and now I do! I’m really happy about that. But I didn’t need to do so and obviously…

I play a ton of old games because of video game FOMO, as you say, and honestly I’m pretty happy with the results. Playing FF7 was not always a good time, but I was thrilled, upon completion, to now be able to participate / take in a ton of discussions about FF7. Planning on going through the Metal Gear series next!

Philosophically, I think if you’ve partially a game and you’ve had your fill of it then it shouldn’t be in your backlog. I guess everybody has different definitions of “homework,” but if a game feels like homework then you’ve probably gotten what you wanted out of it.
