Today my cousin turns 20! For the past I don’t know how many years, I like to post a song to facebook about turning the age that she is turning. 20 has proven tricky (actually, the past few years have been tricky). Does anyone have any good songs that are about being 20, turning 20, mention the age 20?
I am in need of recommendations.
I can’t really say much beyond that I taped today, it was fun, and that it will air in late January!
1. My Tuesdays are super-busy, so I like to use the Instant Pot slow cooker function for dinners. What are your favorite easy, IP slow cooker recipes? I feel like most IP recipes are pressure cooker ones. Bonus points for: vegetarian, low carb, minimal chopping. Also, my husband doesn’t eat pork.
Slate published an article about the New American Songbook. I can’t say I disagree with too much of it, although I agree that ranking Empire State of Mind so high (or even putting it on the list at all) speaks to the myopia of New Yorkers. I also think that the inclusion of the Liz Phair song is optimistic. If it’s…
I know there are a lot of crafty people here. I got a t-shirt the other day that I really want to love. It’s a unisex shirt, though, so it’s a little weirdly shaped. Does anyone have any good ways to make it less boxy? I think part of the problem may also be the fabric, and I think there’s less I can do about that.
I realized I didn’t give an update on what happened! I ended up losing the alternate coin toss, so didn’t make it on the show for the episodes taped Wednesday. That means that they will reschedule me for a later date, at which point I’ll definitely get on.
So, as I’ve mentioned, I am going to be a contestant on Jeopardy this season. Tomorrow is the big day! Well, maybe. Since I live in Los Angeles, I’m an alternate, so there is a 50-50 chance I will film tomorrow. If not, then another day.
Jocelyn Bell Burnell is a Scottish astrophysicist. When she was a grad student, she discovered pulsars. As is often the case, though, the accolades went to her PhD advisor, who ended up winning the Nobel prize for the discovery.
Hello from your friendly neighborhood astrophysicist! The perseids peak tonight! It's very close to new moon, so conditions are good for viewing! Look to the northeast. I'm about to go take a look.
I am inordinately proud of the lunch I made today. I have not gone grocery shopping in two weeks because of travel, so the house is getting a bit bare. Yesterday I remembered that I had some chopped up frozen bananas in the refrigerator. So I made peanut butter banana overnight oats with cacoa nibs and coconut…
As I mentioned in the open thread, I’m putting together a panel on Women in STEM. I tried (with varying degrees of success) to get a panel with a good range of careers and career stages. The panel is open to everyone attending the larger event, and will likely be attended by mostly non-women.
Yesterday I was channel surfing and stumbled upon one of my very favorite movies, 10 Things I Hate About You. Even though I own it on DVD and it was edited for TV, I still got sucked in.
Outlander is not a good book. I knew I shouldn’t have read it, based on the fact that I don’t like Game of Thrones, and the person recommending it to me is really into those books, but I thought it would be a quick, easy read to get me back on track, since I was behind schedule. Oh, how wrong I was. Spoilers below.…
A week or so ago, I offered an AMA on the solar eclipse, and people thought it would be better to do it a bit closer to the eclipse. It is now 2 weeks to the eclipse, so let’s do this! (I’ve been watching a lot of Jane the Virgin lately).
