All of those dramatically have increased over time until they were displaced by new technology. Look at the engine in a model T compared to what is in a modern automobile, or the early steam engines to what was powering trains until they were displaced by Diesel.

Those have improved drasticly. The originals looked like they came out of Frankensteins' Laboratory sparking every time they were turned on or off. Now we have switches that we can control with our smartphones.
