Nah, they actually did change the collision detection.
Which is fine, honestly. I don’t believe in separating art from the artist, but I firmly believe you can enjoy stuff while acknowledging its problematic aspects (see also Lovecraft, the other HP :P).

I know that’s where the merchandising/fandom ended up calcifying, but it’s still a little weird to me to think of Minecraft as a gen-Z thing.

If they’re spending thousands, then they have a problem. It’s an inherently exploitative business model, and just going, “well maybe they can afford to spend that money” is handwaving how predatory it is.
