It was game of the year, not ongoing game of the year or game of the year I kept playing.

Not the case, the entire game... the whole thing and all features... are playable in VR. You can play with non-VR friends/strangers in the same game, build your base, fly your ships, and explore. Per some articles the game is better in VR than not due to more intuitive building/terrain manipulation/inventory

They moved over a million units at $60 a pop at launch, and despite refunds they have a tiny team and little overhead. Any further sales as the game improved just helped.
