My understanding is that the entire filevault home folder is backed up to TimeMachine. No further encryption would be necessary. You do have to be logged out for that backup to occur.

Are there any known disadvantages to using FileVault, other than possibly losing everything if you forget your password and the key?

Keep in mind that unlike iOS, there’s really nothing that you can’t do with Android through apps, as there are no artificial limitations. The later versions will change the look and include some of these features for you, but it’s not that big a deal. I could probably get by using a five year old version of Android…
