I’m glad that they put that sign in there to let folks know it was a car. Others might be confused.

How long has it been since you’ve owned a Kia or Hyundai? Overall quality and reliability of korean cars has improved dramatically over the last 5 years.

A+ gif usage. Blazing Saddles is the best Mel Brooks film.

I mean, how can a slave be classified as a traitor? Slaves, by definition, aren’t citizens. Or even fully human — they’re “property.” It isn’t *their* land of the free. So how can Key think of them as traitors when they want the same freedom he wants?

Exactly. To juxtaposed the on-going civil rights fight with her bold moves would have made a far better message than their blatant white guilt/absolution scene. The fact that NASA had a ROOM full of black women who were bad-ass mathematicians already said that NASA was ahead of the curve.

It looks like pwrshft has a lackofsituationalawareness. According to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission:

Wanting a better country is not the same as wanting to live somewhere else.

Bingo. When you’re written out of history books, your story has to get dug up and told by other means. That’s why Stuff You Missed in History Class features so many women (enough so that certain audience members actually complained about it).

He could also be living in a country that enforces empty shows of devotion with ruthlessly applied state force. Maybe you should fucking move to one.

I am a 64 year old woman that watched every launch on TV at home or in school. I never heard a single word about these women until the movie. There is no excuse for that. None.

But he doesn’t. He lives in a country that believes in freedom of speech.

People have a right to protest. That is the bloody essence of America.

This awesome news but what gets me why did it take decades and a movie about this woman before NASA or whomever decides these kind of things to finally do it?

You’re right. Canadians don’t do it and only use their anthem during important events.

It’s a show...the anthem has become like the roaring lion of MGM at the beginning of movies...a vanity placard that serves no purpose other than to indoctrinate

You are not wanted on sites like the Root, so your comment will forever remain pending. Not sure of you realise that. I will go when you whites get out of Africa and the Caribbean. You people are the most destructive people to have ever graced this earth.

Well deserved and so glad she actually got to see it.

Maybe this was never about the anthem. It was way back in the halcyon days of football when the NFL began requiring players to stand on the field—the year 2009, according to NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy. Curiously, teams began receiving millions of dollars for “paid military tributes” in 2011, according to CBS

Even if it WAS about the Anthem, I don’t want to hear about it from these people.

It’s a bit complicated. He did free his slaves, he did teach freed slaves, and he worked pro bono for slaves attempting to gain freedom in court. He was also highly critical of slavery as an institution in public. But, it’s important to note that he was also anti-abolitionist, and rejected the idea of freeing slaves
