that's why I ultimately quit. like most people, I had the sudden realization that you needed a constant influx of money into your hobby just to be able to play. and to actually win you needed to invest a LOT of money.

wow…steve's story is so similar to mine, it's eerie. i never revisited the game at all (save for downloading the M:tG computer game in my mid 20s and nerding out over it for several weeks).

kird ape was ridiculosly good, which is why they stopped making it after 3rd ed iirc. it was a 1/1 creature that cost one red mana to cast. but if you controlled any forests it got +1/+2. perfect for a red/green deck.
