Why not write a counter piece to the Times op-ed instead of doing this? The Times’ piece is shit but this isn’t a counterargument, its just a feedback loop for the commenters here who have a bizarre rage stroke over the Times’ shitty opinion section. 

I was so excited when I picked this book up. A friend pitched it as something inspired, transgressive, and unique. But to me it read less like a novel and more like an unintentionally melodramatic summary of a TV show.

You just got me to reevaluate my feelings on this: I was being totally selfish. It makes *me* feel better that he beat those addictions. It changes almost nothing for his kids.

Maybe my reaction is weird but on some level I’m glad that he didn’t relapse and kill himself. It might be a misguided feeling but I can’t help being relieved that he really was, for all of his other pain, able to keep clean. 

It’s so tough. My feelings are quite similar to yours. I think renaming the award is the smart move—it doesn’t need to be named for a particular person to be an honor to win.
