I think you’ve solved it!

I mean, I hate baby boomers too, but this article is some nonsense.

Ikr? The article should have been about “faux feminists” not “second wave feminists”.

A thousand times this. Kate is the *daughter* of a second wave feminist, the activist and writer Ann Roiphe. She does not belong to the second wave either generationally or in terms of her politics.

Stassa, how old are you? Bc you have seriously confused your waves of feminism.

Thank you for having the energy to do this.

There is room for a nuanced discussion of #MeToo—its failures, sucesses, and potential futures; discussions that are free from accusations of “witch hunts” and “feminist hysteria.” But that complexity is not to be found in the embrace of liberal second-wave liberalism.

In fact, why not blame the “oh come on, toughen up and be a Cool Girl like us” on the MOST recent wave.... which was that sort of performative “I’ll wax my pussy and act in porn all I want and you can’t tell me what to do” Spice Girl Feminism? Makes as much sense as blaming Steinem et al. for being calcified.

It’s just another excuse to pick on us #olds

Speaking as someone who is no longer young, I’d like to point out there are a lot of patriarchy enablers rising up in the 20-30 something age category. It has a lot more to do with privilege than age.

Don’t go by this post, which is completely out of the blue. Roiphe is not a second wave feminist, and arguably not a feminist at all.

Yeah, this article is really about what most would call third wave feminists. Second wave was more radical than Roiphe et al.

Yeah, this is a bizarre take. Deneuve has been pretty open throughout her career about not wanting to be identified with the feminist movement, and Roiphe has specifically positioned herself as a foil to feminists from the get-go. It might be possible to make this case using other second-wave feminists, but Deneuve

If Jezebel represents third wave feminism then no wonder feminism is such a joke these days.

No. Stassa don’t give a fuck.

You titled this wrong. If you want to go after liberal feminism, go ahead, but this is not about second wave feminists. You can find this kind of “feminism” in every feminist generation, including your own.

They don’t recognize themselves in this feminism because they are not feminists. Roiphe, Merkin, Deneauve, etc. all exploit the patriarchy for their personal gain and can’t extend their imaginations to anyone else’s experience. That’s not feminism of any wave.

I’m seeing the accusation but not the meat of why liberalism is to blame for the backlash. Care to elaborate?

This article really underscores that while jezebel is great with pointing out the many flaws of lena dunham’s twitter feed, it doesn’t “get” feminist theory.

Second wave feminism is the absolute anthesis of “liberal” feminism, aka “fun” feminism. You seem to be labeling these women as “second wave” because of their age. Not very feminist of you, is it?
