So if you admit both 5 and 18 are both arbitrary, why should someone be able carry forward 18 years of loss? That’s a really long fucking time. That loss could have kids and send them to college. So make it 5 years. That doesn’t really answer the question of why keep it around for 18 years, which is an incredibly long period for a carryforward.

Wouldn’t the easiest answer to (1) be to limit the carryforward period? Why should Trump be allowed to offset gains in 2013 against losses in 1996? I can see a one or two year period, but not 18.
