Well, at least he didn’t have to worry about scurvy? RIP to your grandpa- that generation was amazing!

Emphasis on the “much” not the “food”. We waste food. So damn much.

You don’t have to refrigerate eggs unless it gets really hot and humid inside your house, and even then, they are OK for a few days. I think only Americans refrigerate eggs? Maybe others too and I’ve only ever seen Americans do it.

Adding to this tip. When it sinks, it’s so fresh that it is harder to peel when you boil them. So if you want hard boiled eggs, use the ones that sink but stand upright. Those are perfect for hard boiling with really easy peeling.

I have to admit I laughed at that. “Enough for everyone” etc. But I’m not laughing AT your grandpa. And I know what you mean by that generation. A friend’s mom from that generation used to insist that they keep all the lights turned off in the house during the day to save electricity for when it was really needed- at

Why is this? This is policy in so many places that I figure there must be some liability reason- like some legal bureaucratic mess that prevents stores from acting in a reasonable way. Because it’s not just Starbucks- it’s most places.

It helps to refrigerate bread, but I feel it slightly changes the taste. But I figure I get fresh bread for a couple days, then refrigerated bread for a couple of days and don’t have to waste as much.

To be fair, limes frequently turn brown before the lime juice spoils. And if you microwave any lime (even a really solid green one) it makes it easier to squeeze.

Wow. But how do you find all that stuff? Do you search through their dumpsters or just look around near the trash cans?

I cut mold off cheese, too. Also sometimes on bread when it is just starting and just a spot on the crust. And if you eat any garden fruit and veggies, you get way less squeamish about cutting around ugly or soft spots, etc.

Or people who live far away from a grocery store. It’s a city habit to be able to run for groceries every few days. However, there are ways to stock up and still not waste, so it’s no excuse for country folk either, just takes a different mindset.

(Edited slightly because I misread something) OK so we have wildly different views of child rearing. Why in the world would it be safe for your children to be in “hearing” distance but not “viewing” distance? I don’t see the difference. I think you might have an exaggerated sense of what 30 yards looks like. Visualize

Look, I’m not sure what we are even disagreeing about anymore. “Watching” means you can see something- it is in your line of vision. If something had happened, she would’ve seen it and could have responded to it in seconds. It’s 90 feet. Imagine standing at home plate in a baseball diamond and looking at first base,

First off, if you say she wasn’t watching them, then you assume she’s lying. Maybe she was, but I’m not going to assume that. She says she could see them the whole time. Most people are perfectly capable of seeing something and talking at the same time. It’s not like she was interviewing for a job as a rocket

Wow. Yes, a six year old can stop a two year old from putting stuff in its mouth. Six year olds can read and do math and play sports and navigate school campuses and figure out how to get/apply Minecraft mods- even extremely sheltered ones who are not allowed to ride bikes alone can do these things. Unless the child

Oh I see, you mean when I was left alone- me specifically anecdotally etc. I can’t remember being two which is why I didn’t say it. Also by the 80s, I would’ve been an older kid, so when I was two, we’d have to talk about the 70s. And also my town didn’t have a mall until I was about six, and so the whole thing seemed

Looks lovely though! Yikes about the sharks. I wonder why in the world you had that spate of attacks.

Yes I agree with that. I was responding to the “new business idea” part. Certainly, easier access to affordable childcare while parents work or interview for jobs is a win-win for everyone and has long-term benefits for society.

You have to admit, that was one 8 year old who could definitely handle a food court if he had to.

Totally. Two is way too young. But two with a six year old isn’t- or at least wouldn’t have been back then.
