*sigh* Does anyone actually understand the term 'uncanny valley'? You don't get the effect from characters that are clearly not intended to look real, like these Smurfs. They are stylized cartoons and the animation will probably be stylized as well. In short, they are at the opposite end of the graph from the uncanny

But Indy did die... in a refrigerator. I saw it happen. :(

I'm surprised to see the area where I live highlighted. I've remarked many times in the past how lucky we are in the mid Atlantic states that we don't get very many natural disasters. Earthquakes here are extremely rare and always tiny, usually imperceptible. We occasionally get tornadoes but they're weak, causing

@Mark 2000: Wrong. Gollum was an entirely CGI character. Andy Serkis portrayed Gollum on set while wearing a white unitard in order to give the other actors someone to act with and also provide reference for the animators. He then later reenacted those scenes on a motion-capture stage. However, a large percentage of

@Garrison Dean: R.O.A.C.H.: Since it's likely to be a disaster no matter who ends up with the gig, it might as well be a an enjoyable one. You get my vote!

This has to be in the top 10 biggest non-issues of our time. Scientists decide to reclassify Pluto as a dwarf planet and the news media is all, "ZOMG, Pluto not a planet anymore according to meanie, childhood-raping scientists!" They completely failed to notice that the the term "dwarf planet" contains, rather

@njdevil: These faces are identical. The only difference is the contrast in the image on the right is higher, so it appears more male. Neat, eh?

@metallicfire: You can have a superbly detailed, gorgeously rendered model, but if the animation is off, it's heebee jeebee time. In fact, those are the ones that look the worst! The rigging of the model is very important but that's not something you're going to see in a still picture. It will certainly show in the

@Fulgrymm: They look like 3D cartoons to me. Very good ones, at that. If you think this is in any way an attempt at photorealism then either you think Weta Digital is grossly inept (demonstrably untrue) or the people where you live must look very, very strange.

@Daumier: They call them cartoons. I'm surprised you've never seen any before. They're kind of everywhere.

What's with all this whining about the uncanny valley? You don't get the uncanny valley effect, the "dead eyes" look that's the result of unrealistic animation, from still images. No animated footage has been released yet so how can anyone know where it lies in relation to the uncanny valley?

That Tron helmet is pretty sexy but I think the popcorn hole is missing something. Some sort of apparatus that would allow you to attach the popcorn bucket like a feedbag. This is America, you know.

@Dr Emilio Lizardo: I'm glad that I'm not the only one whose first thought was that song.

@lazyeight: It was filmed for PBS but it turned out so well they gave it a theatrical release instead. Jane Alexander received a best actress Oscar nom that she very, very much deserved.

Ah, the plot of Avatar 2 revealed. James Cameron said the sequel would explore Pandora's oceans. Now we know what they find.

Testament. I saw it as a teenager and I wasn't right for days afterward. Very disturbing.

Looks like Katee Sackhoff. Hmm...

I think I got more information out of this interview with Peter Jackson and Phillipa Boyens than out of all the other articles I've read on this issue combined. Jackson's right, the damage is done. Sadly, it sounds like the vast majority of the people who will suffer for this are not the ones responsible. As usual.

GACK! Sumatran Rat Monkey! The zombie apocalypse is upon us, people! Remember what you've learned!
