BTW, the bridge you refer to is not actually the Bixby Bridge on PCH but the Colorado Blvd bridge over the Arroyo Seco in Pasadena CA. Route 66 did indeed come into LA over that bridge for a period although there were several route re-alignments over the decades. 

Even the routing of US66 itself was a bit of a cheat. It mostly just followed the rail line from Tulsa to Barstow to LA. And there was absolutely no incentive for the rail route surveyors to select interesting, challenging terrain.
