But the news headline will still read, “Apple iPhone caught fire and burned someone”, with all the negative public sentiment that entails. It doesn’t matter if they even get a retraction afterwards, the damage is done. An (admittedly extreme) example - if someone is accused of rape in a newspaper headline and the

They won’t get anywhere attacking free speech/freedom of the press, so their best-bet is to discourage behavior likely to get them in the news in a negative light. Third party batteries combusting or expanding/failing? That’s negative potential headlines assessed at XX dollars worth of risk. Restricting the repair of

Yes, it absolutely is possible! In which case Apple reclaims the device for field failure analysis, pulls the service history, can see the serial number of every component inside the phone - then if a few such failures occur within a specific component manufacturing cycle, issue a recall or repair extension to

Eh - just make informed decisions. If you’re buying an Apple phone, know it has a limited serviceable lifespan and battery replacements will cost more. I don’t know why this is such a huge surprise to everyone.

Until you run a recalibration and initialize the battery for that phone, then it’ll be fine and the service record will be updated with what battery serial is currently paired with which phone. Why is that a problem?

Lots of people don’t have problems until they do.

Well, I haven’t done end-user support in many years but I am still familiar with the service logistics. Apple’s “view into the battery status” is calibrated based on a very specific set of parameters. When you use a third party battery it’s not calibrated to the same spec, the parameters are unlikely to be the same,

Playing the odds.

That doesn’t change what news headlines will say. Even if they won in court (if it even went that far) the brand injury was already done.

If you get a spare couple minutes, you should try reading it.

I see where Apple’s coming from because when it happens, the news headline isn’t going to say “A self-repaired iPhone using an unauthorized third-party battery caught fire and burned off a guy’s dong”. It’s going to say “An Apple iPhone caught on fire and burned off an innocent customer’s penis”. The other facts don’t

For every “good” tech swapping batteries, there are 50 on Craigslist doing it for 10 bucks. They’re generally using the cheapest of the cheap Chinese batteries that tend to swell up after ~100 full charge cycles. They should make an AASP cert specifically for battery swaps and provide proper parts and logistics

Worked for Apple for several years. Have seen WAY too many macbooks/pro’s with burned or expanded chinese batteries to think third party batteries in an iPhone is a good idea. That’s a ticking timebomb, in your pocket, close to your junk. Having seen a few Li batteries cook off in my time, I don’t want that in my

Your car battery isn’t lithium, it’s lead acid. There is no comparison here.

There’s something enticing about the burbly exhaust, the short wheelbased slightly twitch handling, and the fact you feel like you’ll fall out the window going around tight corners :P

One of these was super helpful for a herniated disc that caused my hands to numb-out. It was the only thing that relieved the pressure and allowed me to relax. Super dorky, a pain in the butt to store at home, but it was totally worth it.

My abarth was awesome whenever it was working. Sadly, it was a victim of a lack of qualified dealerships to work on it. In 12 months of ownership it was in for service for 8 of them.
