Jay Leno’s restoration staff have been using 3D printing for years to make replacement parts of unobtainable old car parts. They 3D scan the broken part, fix the scanned mesh in CAD (remove cracks, etc), then print the part in plastic for a test fit. Once that’s good, I believe they use lost wax casting and 3D print

I know! there is a total business model for making old rare car parts using 3d printing. if this metal printing gets small scale and cheap enough one could make old car engine parts.

The first 20 minutes of that movie got imprinted on my pre-teen brain as “you must move to sunny California, buy an Italian supercar, and wind it out somewhere in the Mojave Desert.”

Boeing really did make the right call with the 787. Hats off to the people at Everett for what seems to be a great plane (I never seem to be able to get a flight on one though). But it’ll be a sad day when the 747 line closes, and even sadder when the last of them are retired. But I have a flight on a 747 tomorrow -

I weep for BMW. This design is a hot mess.
