Many people much smarter than both of us have figured this out. Your “hunch” doesn’t trump the years of research that’s gone into deciding Joey Votto is a better hitter than Ryan Howard.

The logic is this: A hitter can’t control what situations he comes to bat in, and a hitter can’t just decide to hit a double in high leverage situations. The only thing a hitter can do is: 1. make an out, or 2. not make an out.
