It was clear that she was always going to become a villain, but the way it plays out over the course of the series it’s like the producers didn’t get that note until the very end. So much of her pursuit of power was framed as a positive thing. Those trusted advisers didn’t really start talking in earnest about “Hey,…
Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones both have excellent pilots, the difference is that BrBa actually pays off every element introduced in the pilot in a satisfying way later on in its run. Whereas GoT generally fails to do that, either because the answers are stupid or irrelevant to the endgame.
I think the problem is why did she marginalize all of them, and that feels up to bad writing.
HOLY SHIT, now I have that song in my goddamned head. It hasn’t been in my goddamned head for 20-some years.
‘Dany’s heel turn didn’t come particularly out of left field.’
I had zero interest in Breaking Bad. But I happened to read some reviews toward the end of season three and decided to take a peek since Amazon offered the pilot for free. Hooked, and hard.
I’ve somehow not only never seen, but have never even heard of, either of those shows.
People watching the show and reading the books were OK with all of these deconstructions as long as there was more boobs to be seen.
There’s the idea, and then there’s the implementation. The last season in some benny hill fast forward shattering all sense of geographical, temporal and psychological progression. Plus, the endorsed fantasy clichés that did also contribute to the series success : the tits-and-gore shock value that established Game of…
Breaking Bad, Lost, and Mad Men all have rock solid pilots. However, having just recently gotten into this show before they booted it off Prime in the UK, I can say that the pilot for The Americans also kicked ass. By the end of it, we went from “do we really want to spend the next month watching 6 seasons of TV” to…
The key thing to remember is that Game of Thrones (ASOIAF) was never supposed to be a mainstream hit. It was always a niche series of novels made by an author that got tired of the traditional tropes and tried upending them in a fantasy setting. In other words, GOT is a fantasy novel series that largely rejects the…
Yeah Lost has a fantastic pilot. It’s bloody brilliant.
Yeah 33 is goddamn fantastic and the show manages to keep that feeling of desperation and only just surviving for most of its run too.
Oh my goodness, I’ve been talking about Lexx for months in recommending the pilot I Worship His Shadow to people (I own the whole show on DVD).
It doesn’t get mentioned a lot, but I thought the pilot for Lexx was really good. I thought the show overall was inconsistent(the musical episode “Brigadoom” being another highlight for me), but the pilot might be my favorite for a sci-fi show.
I know there was the miniseries beforehand (also good, especially the second half) but Series 1 episode 1 of Battlestar Galactica ‘33' was a perfect hour of television that pre-emptively put to shame The Last Jedi and its pitiful idea of a space pursuit - some 13 or so years earlier and for a small fraction of the…
It’s a good pilot, but for me nothing has ever gripped me from the start as much as the Breaking Bad pilot.
