Well, mostly I was just taking an opportunity to point out how ridiculous that Oscar was, because I’m still bitter about it. Some of my favourite movies use exclusively needledrop, but I’m not nominating any of them for Best Original Score.

I guess that depends which pronouns Alexis used. I’ve seen both in the coverage, but Wikipedia uses female pronouns. This article (not sure how much I trust it) makes the following claim:

I know a lot of people watch documentaries only to have their own views echoed back to them, but I hope it’s not everyone. When I see a Russian (or Saudi or Ugandan or Ukrainian or someone from any country with an awful record) defending his compatriots’ valiant defense of LGBT rights, I’ll be just as salty.

Except before I raised the anecdotal example of my friend, I gave you several links detailing endemic, violent homophobia in Jamaica.

One of my best childhood friends is a gay man from the Bahamas, and when he’s back home he has to be so deep in the closet I hardly recognize him. The existence of gay sex tourism doesn’t preclude the existence of rampant and violent homophobia.

Homophobia exists everywhere.
