I used to adjunct on the side in community college, in California, teaching chemistry and biotechnology. I made 3,000-5,000 bucks per class/semester, this would be about 10 years ago, and I doubt it’s gone up much. No benefits, no chance of advancement-so I did it at night on top of a day job. I would’ve loved to be a

I did leave the country-to accompany my spouse to his country in SW Europe where he has a stable but not particularly interesting or well-paying job as an academic. The situation for academics is somehow even worse here-plenty of people in their 30s and 40s live with their parents even though they work full time. I

Oh god. I was doing my PhD in a bio-chem-related field when my adviser was denied tenure. My committee didn’t really know what to do with me and so they basically threw up their hands and I ended up leaving my program before finishing-I wrote one of my projects into a Master’s and left and it was, and still is,

And I’m sure that if I scroll down a bit there will be a bunch of people blaming the people who had the “wrong majors” or whatever, even though the classes they teach are required and lots of people are enrolled in them...

I tell one of my friend who has been trying to get a tenure-track job for years now that she should write cover letters with these articles and say Dear Search Committee I can do way better than this nonsense plz hire me thxbye

I can’t tell you how many good, accomplished friends I have with PhDs who are still struggling in postdoc fifty eleventy or just gave up and do whatever else while buttheads like this have tenure 4 lyfe. Geezus.

And maybe we just like sex for itself and it doesn’t have to be a gotdamn transaction that everything is based on

I really appreciate seeing this covered for a broad audience. I am an American living in the Basque Country. My in-laws lived as persecuted minority language speakers under Franco for half their lives. This area has flowered in the last 40 years but it was probably still set back irreparably in some ways by the

I grew up in rural NY but I now live in SW Europe, which has high-density towns and, at least near the bigger cities, excellent public transit. Just bought a ground-floor apartment so I will soon have a small yard, which is hard for me to do without-I am a plant and animal nerd and I think there should be more

Unfortunately, people with this much money do not suffer any consequences in the U.S., at least they nearly never do. But I’m with ya...

Funny how, anecdotally, among the people I grew up with who think they are being funny and contrarian by posting off-color, racist, anti-semitic, etc. stuff, most of them have been in the military/law enforcement. funny.

Not related, but even though people were after Melania before about her stilettos, she’s wearing white pants here, which is just as impractical?

TBH I thought that guy actually sounded somewhat qualified-he did a grad degree in Catalonia and is aware that the Spanish state has more than 1 language, which is far and away a lot more than a lot of people in the U.S. I’ll take it.

That is a wig, right? I mean.

This isn’t hers either but does showcase her talent.

It looks like psoriasis or something similar

You beat me. Although I was also thinking of Albany.

I’m so happy to see people coming around to this perspective. I’m curious o know how much of this plan the NYC schools adopted

I’m from Warren County, which is uh, even more so.
