To be fair, Square's narrative conventions have changed over the years as well. XIII had extremely extensive cinematic sequences, where dialogue is at the center of long sections of the game. When you make the writing so central, yes, it definitely stands out and requires stronger writing.

It's almost certainly not Square Enix's responsibility to tell Gamestop. It may have been nice of them, but not their responsibility.
