The question is... are these "core gamers" just a smaller part of the current gaming market, or have they actually decreased in number by a significant margin?

I like the idea in general, but the price point you gave is unreasonable.
And thank goodness those hackers stood up for the little people, but taking down PSN and thus preventing all PSN users from being able to access the service for two months, and then simultaneously exposing all of those users' credit cards' information.
This article is just overflowing and oozing out with typical Kotaku anti-sex feminism.
Are you talking about Sony being hacked?
I'm sorry, but I already made my mind up by this point. Yes, it was the right thing for MS to do. Yes, it'll help their system sell more. But no, it's too little too late for me. I no longer trust MS, and I regard the Xbox One with disdain. Consider that I own all three current gen systems, and would buy the 360…
Don't feel like a big discussion, but the Steam platform does not require a connection to the internet to play a purchased game.
Most viewers are wisely just bypassing this off-topic post, thus they aren't represented. At any rate, go back to watching your non-video game related Game of Thrones show. I'm out.
I like your use of the collective, royal "we," giving the illusion of unanimity where there is none. One of the first posts on this thread was that this post doesn't belong on Kotaku.
What "serious gamers" care about would undoubtedly be issues that concern gaming, games, and the gaming hobby in general.
From Kotaku's "About" page:
EXACTLY! Game of Thrones has NOTHING to do with video games, and it's frustratingly annoying that it pops up on Kotaku.

Before you read the meat of my response to you, please first understand that I own Monster Hunter games on multiple consoles, including the PS3, Wii, PSP, and 3DS. I even imported Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD from Japan, and play it in Japanese (I know the language fairly well).
It looks nice... but the truth is, these very colorful, multi-colored wallpapers make it hard to see the icons on your desktop.
To put it simply, unless you need a Mac environment for school/work purposes, buying a Mac is about paying a higher upfront cost for a different but arguably superior OS experience.
I wish they'd do a little more than just up the resolution/AA/whatnot for this HD remakes. The truth is, I'll get an HD remake of a game, say ICO/Shadow of the Colossus, and I love how it looks better... but I was already playing it looking far better than that on my PC through emulation :(
This is similar to EA's one-time use online codes, which they could have used to make the game impossible to resell. They generally only used that to limit online activity or multiplayer.
I wish the Japanese weren't so PC-averse. With their latest games being so oriented toward "stellar graphics," these games need PC ports.
