Lots and lots of people plead guilty for things they didn’t do (for example). Something to the effect of 95% of criminal charges are resolved via plea bargain. It’s one of the many reasons that our criminal legal system is an abject disaster.

One reason to think a plea was coerced is that apparently the prosecutor was trying to charge him as an adult. I can’t think of a good faith reason to do that unless you’re trying to force a plea.
