My Telluride will absolutely do what you are asking and its very accurate.  It knows the difference between my son in his car seat (will notify to check when I get out and will alarm if the key goes too far while he is in there), and an empty car seat or heavy groceries/luggage (no notification or alarm).

A 5 year loan on a 45k car at 5% interest with 0 down is 850/mo. That doesnt seem like too outlandish of a scenario and it wouldnt surprise me to find out that a shit load of people are in this position.
