That's fair, and makes much more sense to me. I probably should have framed my initial post as a question. Apologies!

This is a really good point. Of course these clothes were picked out by a stylist or assistant or something who thought that they symbolized "Thanksgiving middle America family blah blah." Whether they made a misjudgment is another story that in no way justifies the criticism levied upon the girls.

"Whenever a white person uses words—whether favorably or not— towards people of color, there's always a negative connotation (that they created) associated with them."

Yeah, that was odd. You can do yoga anywhere. I was also disgusted at California. You have the Pacific Ocean, wine country, weed...but You Tube? Ungrateful assholes.

I adore melatonin for ensuring a deep and restorative sleep.

The connection is not that tenuous. Even seen a picture of NYPD cops protecting the Chase Bank building? Police exist to protect the interests of the exiting system, and the heart of that system can absolutely be discovered by following the money. Systemic racism and other form of oppression and subjugation, which

Thank You.

The foaming at the mouth pro-Wilson crowd, I would venture, is a very loud minority. As for the sidelines crowd, this seems to speak to a bigger problem of (legitimate?) fear of protesting/organizing in America and popularity of facebook slactivism.

I wouldn't say the majority. I think that between Ferguson and rising awareness of income inequality/economic injustice (youngish, already progressive leaning) white people are waking up on a large scale. White people who are old, rich, and/or in positions of power are another story.

I had an ex like this. This particular trait clustered with similarly miserly ones, like being a cheap tipper, insisting that all financial stuff be 50/50 ("you owe me $1.50 because I bought you coffee yesterday"), and micromanaging who ate what when we went to dinner. Took me 4 years to extricate that one.

My husband is an adjunct at a college, which means that he works hard but is extremely underpaid. His father sends him money every month (loosely tied to some inheritance from Grandpa, I think?), and I don't judge him one bit for accepting it. Having/not having money is as much tied to luck and the realities of living

Thanks for the thoughtful counterpoint. Some of the students' motivations for wanting this demonstration are quite possibly more shady than many of us want to acknowledge. :(

Agree. The lesson was legitimate, and they were warned. I don't think that the teacher deserves to be demonized just because the animal involved was a cute cuddly bunny.

It's Ok...I'm relieved that I'm not alone/insane!

I have family members like this. Except when I DO cite sources (upon demand), those sources are wrong/bad/biased/etc. GRRRR.

Incredible. The full soap opera. Yes!

Part of the issue is this particular picture that is widely circulating now. She is pulling her stomach in and shot from the side in a very slimming pose. In pictures where she is facing the camera straight on, you can see that she has the hips and waist that are closer to an 8-10. This is also my size range, and I'm

That's the thing. The ideology isn't rooted in religious teaching. It's a political ideology of social control and repression, packaged in a quasi-religious narrative in order to sell it to the public.

Thank you. This is precisely how white privilege manifests for white women specifically: the default setting is cute, harmless, quirky, wacky, etc. Lena's getting a pass for the questionable conduct with her sister absolutely conforms to this matrix.

I agree. I'm not super cool with this either. I think your critique makes sense, and I also generally don't like the idea of an experience owned by women being co-opted by male fetishists. It feels like a privilege/entitlement thing.
