The Mastcams can record 10fps video at 720p, and MARDI took 4 pictures per second on the descent and it will eventually send a high-res version back.
The picture in the article was done by the Mastcam, which is for looking at things far away (crater rim, Mount Sharp)

1) They wanted to make sure it, and any debris it threw out when it crashed, were well clear of of Curiosity even in case of a failure.
