Tom Cruise is up there for Top Gun: Maverick, too. Somewhere in the $100 million ballpark.
Hard to disagree with much here.
Those text messages were dark as hell. Hard to believe his lawyers thought they would make him look good.
I saw The Birds a little too young, and Jessica Tandy silently finding the neighbor with his eyes pecked out really haunted me for a while.
Another great entry is Wait Until Dark. An entire movie’s worth of dread and tension just springs out in one jump.
A perfect storm, really. A terrible, obnoxious marketing campaign—evidenced yet again by Eichner’s tweets—but also a terrible poster with no faces, not the greatest title, etc.
I probably should have been clearer: there’s been a full-court press of a (gratingly irritating) marketing campaign to make this movie seem like a capital-H Historic Accomplishment, from taglines to magazine spreads, including some pretty dreadful quotes from Eichner dismissing other gay filmmakers’ work. Lol yes, as elucidated by the subtle marketing, “FUCK ‘EM!!! IF YOU’RE NOT A HOMOPHOBIC PIECE OF SHIT, GO SEE BROS!!!”

Disney probably looked at the fact that next to no movies aimed at older adults were making money at the box office (even buzzy Oscar titles like West Side Story) so the likelihood of an expensive, hard-R erotic thriller making a big splash at the box…
Shooting wrapped more than a year before the Hammer story surfaced, and even a full year before we knew about Letitia Wright’s crazy anti-vax views.
Good.
I remember an acting teacher years ago taught me that no drunk thinks they’re drunk, and they’re just trying to tell you what they’re trying to tell you. So rather than “playing” drunk, you should be trying to “push through” being drunk, and I always thought that was insightful.
The Shining comes to mind.
