I think it has a lot to do with binge watching it in a month. Watching all episodes in a month or two you notice the writing patterns more than when you watch it over 7 years.

You haven't re-watched it recently have you? Yes on occasion there was the hard choices about whether the rules of society still apply when you aren't in society. Far more often she was entirely inconsistent and random.
