The jump you’re referring to happened when Luke was the macguffin of VII. Narratively, for him to disappear himself means there’s only a few logical paths for his character to take. One of which is self imposed exile.

Your point of engineers is well taken. Say what you will about Destiny (and I say that I can’t put it down and pick it back up and have any clue where I am in terms of progression is my biggest issue), but the server side stuff is really good aka matchmaking etc, and from what I’ve read Sony could use the help.
