I’d say it’s more like, Black people who go to Ivy League universities are probably being discouraged from looking at making food for a living. That’s kind of why our parents are sending us there...to distance us from the past when we were forced to feed everyone, although it makes it rather ironic how we are shut out Read more

As a Black tech worker in the Silicon Valley who also happens to be an Ivy League grad, that’s a lot of bullshit. I’ve only had two co-workers (one younger team member and one manager) who were from similarly elite schools, and being an Ivy grad even going into to many tech workers is a rarity. I’m not sure why ppl Read more

Well she’s got to keep the rest of the cash for herself. She’s probably fled to a vacation home upstate to ride it out and has some other gig employees bringing all of her provisions.

It’s definitely not tone deaf. The crisis just shows how many people are vulnerable and how the same social safety net many Americans rally against (including many people who never thought they’d be unemployed b/c they aren’t ‘lazy’) would have been a good idea. I hope that the people who survive come out being more Read more

I’m sure the Black people in DC eat just fine without bodegas. Don’t care if she doesn’t like Black American cuisine but to suggest that Black Americans don’t have food while sitting in a whole chocolate city is a whole lie.

This is the SAME language you’d have heard from people in the Deep South who used to have Black housekeepers. Why, we just LOVE Esther Mae like FAMILY!

In some places it is even worse. The University of Chicago police department is allowed to claim jurisdiction over many Black residents who are not affiliated with the university but live close to campus. It’s pretty ridiculous.

Lupita isn’t part Mexican. She is a Kenyan born in Mexico. Seriously, she didn’t just pop up and this info is not a secret.

When he was speaking at the beginning of the doc, I actually did think he was his father precisely for this reason. I thought, who else other than his dad (or mom) would be praising him at this point?

Well, most of Gina’s whining ignores Black Latinas, who she never includes in anything. So there is that too.

It’s not just the industry. She’s also talking about what it’s like to be a dark skinned black woman in the black community too. We like the elevate light skinned women to represent black womanhood. Double points if they are biracial too. So if she was trying to make a career in films created by black people, they’d Read more

I agree. It does feel a bit irresponsible, like click bait. Have definitely experienced medical racism. But we know nothing about the care she got, whether she was compliant, and whether or not she was advised to come in and didn’t. We don’t know anything but it definitely gets clicks to treat this like we do know. Read more

Thank you. That’s really it. I wonder if people just see Queen and Mo’Nique as the same b/c they are black and not skinny. B/c I feel like a LOT of people do this to black women.

But I have to wonder if you really don’t see the difference between Queen Latifah and Rebel and Mo’Nique. Queen Latifah being “Fat” is something you could debate. Mo’Nique pre weight loss and Rebel were/are fat in a way that isn’t really subjective.

Plus sized clothes and plus sized women intersect but are not synonyms in every case. A size 14 women might fit plus sized clothes. But she isn’t a size 22 woman. Or a size 28 woman. I’d have trouble believing Queen Latifah ever had THAT much trouble fitting into the larger end of “straight sizes” (which is usually Read more

Fair question. And the answer is that it depends what definition you use. It also depends what size you are. Most skinny people would say yes. A lot of fat people, esp. medium to large fats would be no. I wouldn’t even call her a small fat b/c I’ve never seen her with a noticeable belly or jiggly parts. She’s a tall, Read more

Was...Mo’Nique isn’t fat anymore. But yeah, Queen Latifah is definitely border sized...plus modeled sized. Exactly. I don’t know why anyone is trying to pretend that ugly white Gremlin looks like black. Plenty of white folks look like that. It’s an insult to blame what she has facially on on any African DNA. She’s a troll.
