3 speed autos are not a “track day” thing- just drag racing. They still make 2 and 3 speed autos for racing. For drag racing, there’s not much need for a lot of gears. No need for cruising gear, and your top gear only needs to be tall enough to hit your trap speed before the motor redlines.

Other gears aren’t needed. Lots of Pro Street guys run 2-speed Powerglide transmissions because they’re only going a 1/4 mile and don’t want to shift as much.

Most drag cars use either a 2 or 3 speed transmission. I’m not going to pretend to know why.

Going fast for a few seconds is fun, but corners are more fun.
