It's usually fetal blood, so theoretically you could continuously impregnate cows used for milk production, and harvest the blood from the fetuses. Not in the fetal bovine serum industry, but hopefully that's a feasible option? From Wikipedia, seems like currently the fetuses are taken from slaughtered cows intended

I intellectually recognize it’s a super super small risk. But this happened to a woman who worked in my building, and she miscarried fairly far along (it sounded like a horrible/heart-breaking experience). I suspect it may be due to this recent outbreak. Cue paranoia!

My very first crush was a dude named Gryphon! My 6 year old self thought he was the best.

Not cause, but play a factor in raising your chances of getting those.

The problem with lab grown meat is that you still need to use cow fetus blood to grow it. And alternatives they tried don't work nearly as well.

It's funny you say cooking is like a science experiment, cause that's exactly why I dislike cooking.

Just FYI there is a known link to suppression of inflammatory/autoimmune disorders when pregnant. It's how we keep from attacking our fetus. (Side note: I know it's a horrible idea, but I want to see if I can eat foods that I'm normally allergic to when I become pregnant).

Now playing

I...can't believe this is the dude from Nerf Herder. Mind blown.

*sniff* Damn, pull yourself together neisseria. Can't believe I'm tearing up over this. Just struck a chord, especially with how hard I rejected anything Chinese as a kid in order to fit in, and how much it hurt my parents.

I wouldn't call it healthy at high concentrations though. Not saying that I'm worried about ingesting it when I eat shrimp (the shrimp will actually kill me first =P). But I'm still careful as hell when I use 10% formalin in lab. That shit will make you sick, and can be a carcinogen with high exposures.

That is false. Ebola requires direct contact as it is not airborne. The influenza virus and those that cause colds are airborne, which makes them much more contagious.

That's what makes me so frustrated. So many different pathogens could be under our control if we just had more resources and better education to prevent their spread.

I think it's hard to predict outside of a laboratory environment. I mean, serial passaging of pathogens to get an attenuated strain is how we got vaccines in the first place. I did a little reading and looks like they've been able to do that with a mouse model of Ebola, but not really clear as to what would happen

Virulence can increase, but changes in modes of transmission are quite rare.

Seriously. He could not be any more clear with that =/

I once had a guy back down after I said it was my anniversary. And he said he was backing off out of respect to my guy on this special day, otherwise he'd keep trying. Ugh...

Hella. And watching on a device can be a pain when the seat in front reclines all of a sudden, spilling everything (including your drink) into your lap.

Heinlein approves.

Same!!! Listened to that story right before getting out of the car. Had to sit for a while and get my composure. So many feels!

Reminds me of an episode of This American Life. Yes it's kind of hilarious how people go through life with these misconceptions (I certainly had my fair share due to a sheltered upbringing by immigrant parents)...but some of them really are kind of sweet.
