Most of us - especially women - speak in a higher pitch than natural. Stress and social expectation have a lot to do with how we sound. Also most of us are surprisingly bad at breathing. Shallow breathing makes for higher pitched voices because we run out of air and unconsciously panic.

With the knowledge that she was faking it, it does sound really strained. Like she’s just recovered from losing her voice or something.
