The bag I check (vs. the carry-on) is bright sapphire blue. I’ve painted all the visible screw tops with bright red nail polish. Not as obvious as large letters on the side, but I know what to look for and can spot it immediately as it comes off the conveyor.

Same here. I really didn’t understand the issue until I was older, then realized I have a major problem with abandonment (perceived or real). Still working through it.
