Well, that’s it. I’ve officially rolled my eyes so hard that I’m blind. I hope you’re all happy.

Good point. Carry on then.
That seems like the correct amount of hostility for a question about film distribution.
Exactly. One movie in this vein could sneak in and steal the audience of people sick of blockbusters. But Hereditary got all the hype and now the other two are dead in the water, even though they’re both good movies. It’s a shame that the lesson the industry will learn is “Nobody wants to see low-budget genre movies”…
Which is sad, because I really liked it. It doesn’t entirely stick the landing but I will always have a soft spot for genre fare that leaves room for actual conversation.
Can somebody familiar with the movie business explain to me why it was decided to release Upgrade, Hotel Artemis, and Hereditary all at the same time at the beginning of the summer movie season, so they have to compete not just with each other but with all the Big Gulp cup movies as well? There’s been a total drought…
I’m pretty generous about what I allow into the horror tent, so that’s not likely to be a problem. I’m not snobby like that. Thanks for this perspective, though. It sounds like a reasonable mindset to go into the film with.
I actually like most of these movies, but you’re not entirely wrong. I apologize for unwarranted edginess. I was more getting at the fact that I’ve seen all the movies people are afraid to see, because that’s the type of weirdo I am. That doesn’t make me tougher or cooler. It just means I’m probably a harder mark for…
It’s not that. I actually like most of the movies listed. I’m just saying, I see a lot of stumping for Hereditary on this site, and I’m trying to consider the source and attune my expectations accordingly.
A Serbian Film: Basically a really, really black comedy.
I felt the same when Robin Williams died. I go down into some pretty dark holes sometimes, and each time it seems to get a little darker. The thought that even someone as successful and universally beloved as Williams or Bourdain could go down into a hole so dark he’d rather die than spend another minute in it scares…
I think it’s going to be called “Manson In The Streets.”
Hey, no problem. Thanks for asking an honest question and appreciating an honest answer. It’s amazing how rare a commodity that can be nowadays.
I also have an unusual kink that makes it difficult to form lasting relationships. I get really turned on by not getting involved with any of you gross, needy human beings with your diva-ass panda-in-captivity libidos that only work under the most specific of circumstances. I am getting aroused just thinking about it.
I had an ex who was deep, deep, deep into nerd shit. D&D, LARPing, Farscape, the whole nine. She put together a movie night with me and some of the dorks she’d adopted. We took turns bringing in movies. One time, this guy who’d had his name legally changed to Grey brings in the Christopher Lambert Beowulf movie. (In…
I made the mistake of joining a horror movie group one time, thinking sharing interests with people might make me like them more. The opposite happened: It made me like my interests less.
It reminds me of the time a female critic received death threats for writing a negative review of Man of Steel. I’m sure Superman would feel real proud of the grown-ass men who thought that was an appropriate way to behave.
That’s cool. I’m not trying to convince you. She didn’t do much for me but I don’t have a problem with her. I’d still happily break a troll’s fingers for the way they’ve treated her.
You’re probably right. Rose didn’t make enough of an impression to suck. She was just...there. I like the idea of somebody resolutely un-Star Wars being involved in a Star Wars plot, but they didn’t give her anything to do. She didn’t actively harm the movie, but she felt like she was taking up space that could have…
Yeah. The entire subplot she was involved in was garbage, so she really never stood a chance. Of course, that can’t be the fault of the white guy who wrote and directed it. It’s gotta be the fault of the poor actress who just did what she was told.
