It is absolutely staged, like all realiy shows. Real life is boring and not full of constant dramatic twists and surprises. There’s no way to fill a 42 minute episode without scripting.

Off-mission planetary exploration is the quickest way to stop enjoying the game. There’s so much scripted story and quest content that doing the randomly generated stuff is unnecessary and a waste of time.
