So how far do you stretch his approach. In his last 2 to 3 steps, he and Lockette are running directly at each other. Does that not count because at some point before that he was running towards Lockett for the equally as vague “side.”

Lockette wasn’t blindsided no matter how you stretch the wording. He was off balance from the previous block (which is why he was in a bad position for the hit), but was hit head on.
