I might have to re-read. I was sure that the lady was wearing a wedding dress, his friends congratulated him, etc. I think the only reason he admitted to being engaged is because he got caught with the wedding photos so he tried to soften the blow.

Thank you for pointing that out because it’s something that is seriously engrained in journalists (and the American public) when it comes to a certain race of people and their attempts to rally against injustice.
