They are no less efficient nor wasteful then their sedan counterparts. Real world MOG differences are typically less than 1MPG between an automakers SUV cabin vs sedan on the same platform/drivetrain.

The key is Uber cannot tell them when they will work. Unless Uber gets to set their schedule they are contractors.

That is incorrect. Many contractors work where the job/task has fixed costs set by the company. The contractor either excepts the terms or does not.

If employees can choose when and where to work they are contractors.
