I live in Vancouver. I’m more aware of massive housing cost increases than you could imagine.

I have a very clear and first hand “understanding”. I’ve lived through massive housing price increases in one of the most expensive cities in the world with one of the worst housing crisis’. I moved to where I could afford. You can too.

If you’re barely making over minimum wage then how are you really going to make less living somewhere else cheaper? Besides, you can lease a new civic for about $300 a month. Through fuel, insurance and maintenance and you’re barely $600 a month. If you save yourself $1500 a month in rent then you are $900 ahead.

I think you missed my point: you don’t need to hang out or really even work in those ultra expensive areas. The alternative is to find a job and some hobbies in an area you can comfortably afford to live if you don’t want to deal with the commute and it’s associated costs.
