They did believe her. Which was a problem when basic facts wouldn't have checked out if they did a modicum of investigating — like the fact that UVa holds fraternity rush in the spring, not in the fall. Like the fact that there was no party at Phi Psi on the date that Jackie claimed to be raped. Like the fact that…
I think the problem is they did believe her. Obviously they should have been more skeptical but it certainly seems like they erred on the side of believing her and respecting her privacy as much as they could.
What a mess. I'm disappointed; Rolling Stone generally does better than this.
This is a tough one. I have to say this though - whenever anyone in the comments section even touches ever so slightly on possibly questioning anything about a rape victim's story - ANYTHING - they are roundly shouted down by most of the other commenters and labeled "victim-blamers". I think there's a general tone on…
Do you really get to decide whether your own heart is in the right place? I mean usually it's said by other people. I mean, maybe because it's just acknowledging that the non-heart parts of you were in the wrong place.
Agreed. The OP's position is bizarre, and seems to me to come pretty close to saying white people's opinions shouldn't be heard, no matter what they are. It's like saying we should discuss income equality—but we better only talk about the people who earn too little, and not mention those who earn too much.
I binged watched it too! My boyfriend kept going on and on about the show and ended up downloading it for me. But I actually got up to pee after that six minute long shot scene because, fuck was that intense!
But, I thought white people discussing their own white privilege was really good progress. How many times have white people ignored the fact that white privilege even exists? Why is it a bad thing that white people are finally willing to not only acknowledge white privilege, but discuss it with real world examples?
I guess I don't really understand how it's "piggybacking" when it is the same issue- but I can appreciate that some people might see it that way, and will not be using the hashtag.
My impression was that the hashtag isn't for educating black people about how nice the cops are to white people, but educating fellow white people on their own hypocrisy. It's a lot harder to say that these murdered black men were thugs and criminals who "got what they deserved" when white people admit to the same…
In my view, #Crimingwhilewhite is solid ammunition to throw at idiots (shoutout to the assholes I went to high school with in St Louis!) who like to spew "WELL HE SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN BREAKING THE LAW WHAT DID HE EXPECT?"
You know you've broken the law, assbag. You know that you won't be shot if you get caught.
I'm no out protesting tonight but in other protests, there comes a point when cops will randomly say its an unlawful assembly and say we have to disperse (for absolutely no reason) and then arrest a few people so the rest of us will know they mean business. Its a pretty common tactic used by cops at protests. Along…
Because a torched tree will show them good.
Nope. There's always a risk of something happening, so it's best to be in the hospital. Even your blog post says "home births are slightly riskier."
Suddenly, New York City isn't so far removed from Ferguson or Cleveland or any other place where black people are killed with impunity.
If I remember right, wasn't Garner yelling "I can't breathe" as he was being withheld strangled? Didn't the coroner rule it a homicide?
What bugs me is that commenters who are defending Kara's work here are using the drumbeat that all of us who aren't down with it are humorless and don't understand satire.
Your disdain for your readership is apparent. The top-voted comment here is someone saying she understands that it's satire and doesn't find it funny. You don't need to explain it again to us.
We also live in a world where people bandy about the term satire to make excuse for shitty things they write or say so forgive people for not recognizing it because it's often misused.
