My father and mother were both pretty technologically illiterate, so I completely missed out on these types of events, but I always remember going to a state fair and seeing advertisements for a computer fair and wondering what awesome things would be there. Part of me is sad that I never got to experience the days of

If you haven’t, check out the OSSC. Pricey, but it’s a fantastic upscaler that I’ve been very happy with. I’ve heard it’s a little finicky with the SNES due to its unusual clock speed, but for the NES and SNES I’ve long since upgraded to the RetroUSB AVS and Analogue NT. At this point the experience is near indistingui

I was wondering when an article like this would show up. My two best pieces of advice are:

1) Don’t (at least not right now). It’s an expensive hobby and a rabbit hole. Prices are high right now, but they’re deflating a bit (for NES and SNES, at least).

But if you absolutely have to:

2)Never pay full retail in cash.

I’d play FFIV: The After Years half a dozen times before I’d touch FFVIII again. Never got your disdain for the game; it’s a joy to play, especially if you do the challenge dungeons. Sure, it’s a little fanfic-y, but it’s fun as hell, and it’s certainly better than half the low budget dreck that’s come out over the

I totally feel you on Earthlock. I didn’t play the definitive version earlier this year, but the original PS4 version from last year felt very much like a jrpg by committee. It had all the applicable criteria for being called a jrpg, but lacked any real heart to make me feel anything for it.

I can get you ranking Super GnG and Contra III towards the bottom, despite them having huge fanbases. But Castlevania IV at #13? Not only is that game one of the best 2D platformer style Castlevanias, but it also has one of the best soundtracks on the system.

Not sure what part you’re crossing out, but in no way are the nes, snes, or 64 “practically passthrough” devices.

Repro Snes cartridges have become a significant market over the past year. I’m not surprised in the last.

Phew, glad to see someone else agrees with me on this. Legend of Mana is okay, but I can not tell you how disappointed 15-year-old-me was to play that game when it came out.

Sad thing is, I actually had the Mach Pizza Air Freshener as a kid, and I have no idea what happened to it. The stupid thing sells for ~$300 now.

First off, Chris, your inclusion of retro game reporting is much appreciated, and a nice new facet of Kotaku.

I agree with Zonetan here. There are plenty of people who like TG16, and both Bonk 3 and Alien Crush are good games. It’s never a bummer to see a company interested in preserving games, whether they be SNES, Genesis, or TG16.

I really wanted to like Setsuna, but ultimately I thought the game was pretty mediocre. The music was a major sticking point for me, but I also felt like the characters were a bit lifeless too.

Worth noting you’re getting two controllers, which justifies half the price increase. I’m curious as to where the controllers go. I really hope it’s not on the back of the console.

Actually, they changed the age of several characters in Bravely Default, and there was still a major outcry (they also made some costumes less skimpy). I remember some people even promised to boycott. Shrug.

Interesting! How old is it? What model?

$50 for a custom made cable that works perfectly and doesn’t require any adapters is perfectly reasonable to me :)

HD Retrovision cables are fantastic. I use them on my snes, Genesis, and TG16, and they look every bit as good as an emulator running via HDMI. Samsung is the only TV maker I know of that pretty consistently supports 240p.

This is probably the most fair comparison I’ve seen of these 3 consoles. I personally own an AVS, and if you’re just looking for a system that plays NES games really well, this is the system of choice. A couple notes:

I have all 3 of these games on cartridge (the first two since childhood, SD3 a reproduction), but if this comes to the West in a physical format I will gladly drop money on it.
